Preemie Cloth Diapers

There are a few brands that offer preemie cloth diapers and preemie diaper covers.

If you want to use prefolds, you'll have several brands to choose from. If you want to use a different type of cloth diapering system, there are fewer options, but there are all in one, all in two, fitted and pocket diapers in preemie sizes on the market.

While other diaper styles offer convenience and easy of use, many parents of preemies say that they prefer using prefolds for their babies.

Advantages of Prefold Preemie Cloth Diapers

  • Prefolds can be folded in many different ways, which gives you more options to create a fit that's right for your baby.
  • Prefolds are less expensive than other types of cloth diapers, which can be an important consideration since your baby will likely grow out of preemie cloth diapers more quickly than larger sizes of cloth diapers.
  • The soakers you use with your preemie diapers can be reused as diaper doublers as your baby gets bigger, which extends their usefulness and saves you money because you won't need to buy doublers. Fitted diapers may also be used as doublers as your baby gets bigger.

When you're comparing brands of preemie diapers, be sure to notice the weight range that they will fit (some go as high as 12 pounds). A larger weight range might last you a bit longer, and you might even be able to bypass the infant size and go straight to the regular size depending on the combination of brands you choose. However, unless they are extremely well designed, a cloth diaper that is designed to fit a baby up to 12 pounds will probably be quite bulky on your baby if he or she is quite tiny.

The weight range for infant prefold cloth diapers (the next size up from preemie) is typically about 8-15 pounds, so, particularly if your baby is quite small, you might want to look at a brand of preemie cloth diapers that fits to about 8 pounds, then you can switch over to infant sizes once your baby reaches the 8 pound mark.

No matter what brand of preemie cloth diaper you decide to try, I would suggest getting just a few at first and make sure you like them and they fit your baby well before you stock up on a huge stash of them.
